Sir Edward Muteesa II, son of Daudi Chwa II, became Kabaka in 1939. He went on to become the first President of Uganda from 1963 to 1966 during the early years of the country's independence. A constitutional crisis with Prime Minister Milton Obote in 1966 led to the abolition of Buganda's kingdom status and Muteesa II's exile to London, where he died in 1969. He was later reburied at the Kasubi Tombs once the kingdom's cultural institution was restored.
